Haystacks

Two haystacks in golden ochre and brick brown stand side by side at the centre of the canvas, raised on vertical poles, one of which rises far above the top like an antenna. At their base a white cloth is spread on the grass, painted in thick slabs of white and blue-grey. Around, the meadow is grey-green in short strokes, and behind rises a mass of grey-green vegetation and a bluish hill. The sky above is a uniform grey-white. The colour is muted, and the contrast between the warm ochre of the hay and the cool grey of everything else carries the composition on its own.
