The Old House
Casa bătrânească

An old house stands at the centre of the canvas, its walls limewashed grey-white and its broad roof coming down almost to the windows, its laths and metal read in grey and brown-violet strokes; the left side has collapsed and rests on the ground. Above it spreads the grey-green crown of a large tree whose branches leave the frame. Tall grass grows around, treated in green and ochre strokes, and at the right a brown path leads to the house. The sky is a clear blue-grey. The colour is gentle, and the ruin is regarded without pathos, almost tenderly.
