Morning Phantasm

Fantasma diminetii

A stand of trees occupies the centre of the canvas, their crowns painted in silvery white, grey-green and blue in thick knife-laid slabs through which dark branches slip; beneath them the bank descends in waves of olive green, brown and white. At the right, at the edge of the stand, a small white house with a dark roof appears. The background is a warm beige-grey surface with no clear horizon, standing for sky and mist alike. The light is that of early morning, diffuse and cool, and the white of the trees reads more as vapour than as foliage.
