Light in August

A whole field covered with haystacks: more than ten conical forms in ochre, grey-green, pink and brown-violet scatter into depth, those in front large and cut by the edge of the canvas, those behind barely more than points. Each is painted in vertical strokes following the slope of the hay, with a thin supporting pole projecting above. The ground is a smooth ochre-grey surface, and in the distance a few roofs and a line of bluish hills align. The sky is a uniform grey-violet. The light of the title comes not from contrast but from the way each stack reflects a different shade.
