An almost monochrome seascape in grey, blue-green and white. The lower half is dark agitated water rendered in short horizontal strokes, with white crests glinting across the full width. Above it rises a curtain of mist or rain — a vertical greenish-white surface with diffuse edges — that cuts the link between water and sky. Higher up the clouds gather in pressed blue-grey masses with broad knife marks. There is no shore, ship or scale reference: the picture rests solely on its three horizontal bands and on the way the light filters through the middle.
