Landscape with Trees
Peisaj cu arbori

A watercolour worked almost entirely wet-in-wet: the sky above is a single heavy grey wash in which the colour settled by itself towards the edges, crossed on the diagonal by a plum-violet band that serves as cloud and hillline at once. Below it opens a strip of ochre-gold light, the only warm place on the sheet. In the middle stands a large grey-green mass of foliage, built from short vertical strokes drawn with an almost dry brush. In front, thinly spaced, a few slender trees — black, upright, leafless trunks — on a band of red-brown earth. In places the colour was allowed to run downwards and the runs were left uncorrected: they stand in for rain and give the sheet its own time, as though the picture had been caught at the very moment it was drying.
