Ravine

A ravine seen from above and close to: the banks fill almost the whole canvas, opening into white, grey-violet and reddish-brown crests, with lit faces and dark hollows descending to the right. The paint is thick, knife-laid in broad slabs, so that real light catches in the relief of the material. Beyond the lip of the ravine a strip of raw green plateau appears and a line of brown-violet hills, while the sky is a pale grey-white band with a single cloud. The contrast between the almost blinding white of the bank and the cool green of the plateau supplies the whole tension of the picture.
