Willows

A long row of willows crosses the canvas from left to right, their rounded crowns painted in emerald, grey-green and cream in broad strokes; slender reddish-brown trunks line up beneath them like posts. At their base spread white patches — stones or snow — and in front runs a broad brown-violet road receding to the left. In the distance the hills fade into blue-grey beneath a thick white-grey sky with knife marks. The foreground is an olive-green meadow. The light is even and diffuse, and the green of the willows is the only fuller tone.
