Willows

A row of willows crosses the canvas horizontally, their rounded crowns painted in raw green, blue-green and cream, applied with the knife in broad slabs; slender brown-violet trunks descend between them towards a bank of white stones. Beneath the trees runs an orange-ochre road, and at the left a strip of blue water and a line of hills appear. The sky, filling more than a third of the canvas, is a light blue with whitish horizontal strokes. The green is fresher and brighter than in the earlier willow series, and the composition is airier.
