Willows on the Plateau

A stand of willows occupies the centre of the canvas, their rounded crowns painted in grey-green, ochre and white with broad strokes; slender trunks and a few leafless branches rise above them like antennae. Beside them, at the centre, a massive brown-violet haystack balances the group. The ground is a yellow-ochre plateau spread across the full width with bluish shadows, and behind, the hills fade into pale blue. The sky, the upper third, is a smooth beige-grey surface. The colour is muted and unified — the work comes close to a study in broken tones.
