A stone bank fills the lower half of the canvas, broken into large golden-yellow and ochre slabs tilted like steps descending to the left; between them open white and brown-violet fissures, and emerald accents appear at the base. Beyond the bank the water spreads in horizontal bands of blue-grey and muted green, growing paler towards the horizon. Above, the sky is a low grey strip. The paint is very thick, knife-laid in flat slabs, and the saturated yellow of the stone contrasts directly with the cool grey of the water.
