Tree Trunk

A return to the trunk motif, this time in light tones: the grey-white and cream trunk rises vertically at the centre of the canvas and opens into broad branches leaving the frame at left and right, painted in thick slabs of paint. A dark oval hollow appears above, as in the earlier version. The background is divided into zones of golden ochre, olive green, blue-grey and white, with bright red accents at the base; a rocky bank can be made out at the right. The light seems to come from within the white matter itself, and the landscape recedes entirely behind the object.
