A studio composition built out of quotations: at the centre an academically modelled male torso with raised arms holds a pointed instrument, while a white drapery falls over an abruptly cut black plane below. At the upper right a grey-white panel carries a drawing of Leonardo's Vitruvian Man; at the lower left two plaster casts — a violet profile and a frontal ochre mask — stand side by side as if on a shelf. The ground is divided into large flat planes: squared maroon, olive green, blue-grey and brown, crossed by a black diagonal running from the upper left corner to the bottom edge. The contrast is deliberate: the figures are modelled with transparent glazes while the background is woven from matte geometric surfaces, the paint kept thin enough for the weave of the canvas to show.
