2002 · oil on canvas · 50 × 42 cm

A horizontal composition in which the lower half is occupied by a dark blue and indigo mass rising like a wave, with white crests breaking to the left and ochre and crimson accents in the hollows. At the centre a streak of bright turquoise cuts across and is the only vivid colour. Above, the sky is a heavy grey and greenish surface with the marks of a broad brush and a few pressed white clouds. The foreground is a rubbed reddish-brown strip. The motif remains ambiguous — water, rock or snow — and that indeterminacy is precisely the point of the work.
