The Edge of the Grove

The edge of a grove seen from a clearing: at the left a mass of flowering shrubs — deep crimson, pink and white — spills over the foreground, with a few white candles of blossom rising vertically out of the dark green. At the right a stand of blue-green trees comes down to the meadow, and between them a strip of raw green grass opens and draws the eye towards the background, where the hills dissolve into a damp grey-green. The sky is a low white band. Green dominates everything, in dozens of close shades, and the red of the flowers is the only break. The strokes are short and crowded, painted one over another.
