The Great Tree

An old tree fills almost the whole canvas: its thick trunk, its bark rendered in vertical strokes of cream, brown and pink, divides at eye level into long twisting branches that leave the frame in every direction. The foliage is sparse, painted in patches of olive green, ochre and blue through which the pale blue sky shows. Behind, the hills spread in bands of blue, brick pink and violet, and at the base the ground is ochre with long bluish shadows. The work is a portrait of a tree: the structure of the branches is followed with the attention one would give to an anatomy.
