The Small Ravine

The lip of a small ravine seen close to: ochre, cream and reddish-brown boulders and slabs tumble towards the bottom edge, painted in broad angular strokes with blue shadows in the hollows. Over them grow bushes and shrubs in dark green, olive and blue, applied with the knife in compact forms, almost like stones themselves. At the right the vegetation rises and closes the composition; at the left, beyond the ravine, the ground descends into an ochre strip. The sky is clear blue with a few white patches. There is neither house nor road — only the substance of the ground, seen from a few paces away.
