A solitary tree stands at the left of the canvas, its black trunk forked and its crown compact and almost round, painted in olive and dark green with blue-grey accents in broad knife-laid strokes. Around it spreads a field in bands of ochre, yellow-green, brick red and violet treated horizontally; in the middle plane a few smaller trees and a row of red-roofed houses line up. The sky, more than a third of the canvas, is a pearl-grey surface with broadly dragged white clouds. The composition is classical — a landmark tree in an open field — but the colour of the ground is freely invented.
