The Cornu Valley

A winter landscape built from three horizontal masses: above, a thick pink-grey sky worked with the knife; in the middle a white hill rising from the centre like a wave, its crest rounded and its base in grey-violet shadow; below, a narrow band of green-turquoise water with banks of snow above it. In the foreground a few long brown strokes mark branches or a fallen fence. The whole picture is made of dense paint spread in flat slabs — the white is not a background colour but the thickest matter in the painting, and its contrast with the turquoise water is the only cool accent.
