Almost half the canvas is sky: a golden-orange field with broad diagonal strokes and a pink-violet band at the top that descends to the treeline. Below, a dense clump of dark trees crosses the composition, with a single taller tree with a reddish crown rising right of centre; beside it, to the right, stands a small wooden barn with a pitched roof. The foreground is a strip of ochre and brick earth cut by a pale stretch of water. The colour is warm throughout, and the greens are pushed towards grey-green so as not to compete with the sky; the brushwork is free, with thick paint in the crowns.
