At the edge of a village a wooden barn with a pitched roof stands at the right, half hidden by vegetation; in front of it a tall leafless tree lifts its thin branches across the full height of the picture. Around it gather autumn crowns in olive green, ochre and dull red, treated in soft patches without contour. The sky fills the upper third as a washed brick-orange expanse that is echoed in the reddish foreground earth. The technique is broad-brush washing with transparent overlays; the whole work is held in a single warm chord in which green appears only as shadow.
