Phantasm in October

Fantasmă în octombrie

A tree with a broad crown occupies the centre of the canvas, painted in golden ochre, brick red, white and blue in wide knife-laid strokes; beneath it a few slender black trunks descend to a small white house with a pitched roof. At the left the bank is a dark mass of green and brown, and at the right the ground opens towards a bluish valley. The foreground is a reddish-brown strip with stones. The sky above is pale blue with white strokes. The composition is simple and frontal, and the crown works as a warm accent in an otherwise cool landscape.

Shown again in 2007, under the title “Valea Doftanei 1” (63.5 × 54 cm).
